Babas on King is open at 1011 King Street, the space Rodney Scott's BBQ used to occupy. It’s a relocation of Babas on Meeting, which closed after five years. The Post & Courier reports the new shop opened Oct. 2 and is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with a drive-thru lane that isn't running yet.
It's a shame how the last chapter at this address ended. Rodney Scott is an accomplished restaurant owner who got embroiled in his partner's financial stresses. I saw this happen plenty of times back when I was working in the DMV. The good news is that another accomplished LOCAL operator was able to grab the opportunity. I sincerely hope another landlord around town takes a chance on Rodney soon.
For the Babas owners, the bigger kitchen is the point: Babas plans to bake pastries here for all three of its cafés and to grow its catering and events business. It's also the first Babas with beer, wine and a rotating cocktail list, in a room styled after Old-World European bars.
