Mount Pleasant’s retail scene is getting a new addition — and it’s a big one.

HomeSense, a home-focused off-price retailer affiliated with TJ Maxx and Marshalls, has confirmed the opening date of its first Charleston-area location.

The store is scheduled to open Feb. 26 at 8 a.m. at 1909 N. Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, just off the Isle of Palms Connector.

For Lowcountry shoppers, it marks the arrival of a brand that’s still relatively new to the U.S. — but already well established elsewhere.

What makes HomeSense different

HomeSense is owned by TJX Cos., the parent company behind TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshalls.

While HomeGoods focuses on décor and accents, HomeSense goes bigger.

Think:

  • Sofas and sectionals

  • Dining tables and storage pieces

  • Area rugs, mirrors, and lighting

  • Larger-scale furniture meant to anchor an entire room

The concept is designed for shoppers who want statement pieces and everyday essentials — without showroom-level price tags.

Founded in Canada in 2001, HomeSense has been expanding its U.S. footprint in recent years. In South Carolina, locations have already opened in Greenville and on Hilton Head Island.

A strategic Mount Pleasant landing

The store is opening at Sweetgrass Corner, a commercial center that’s quickly becoming a retail hotspot.

Owned by Continental Realty Corp., Sweetgrass Corner gained momentum in 2024 when it also landed Mount Pleasant’s second Trader Joe’s — instantly boosting traffic and visibility along the Highway 17 corridor.

Continental Realty purchased the shopping center for $17 million in 2022 and also owns nearby retail properties including Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and West Ashley Shoppes near Citadel Mall.

Jobs and momentum ahead of opening day

In the lead-up to the opening, HomeSense hosted four hiring events between Jan. 23 and Jan. 31, seeking employees for a range of roles — from cashiers and sales associates to supervisors, stockroom staff, and housekeeping.

That hiring push signaled the store’s fast-moving timeline — and its scale.

What else is coming to the area

HomeSense will join a growing list of Sweetgrass Corner tenants, including Tsunami, Marco’s Pizza, Charleston Sports Pub, Mario’s Peruvian Chicken, a nail salon, ATI Physical Therapy, The Foot Store, and a liquor store.

Next door, another major retailer is on deck.

Golf Galaxy, owned by Dick's Sporting Goods, was announced in 2024 as a future tenant in a large space formerly occupied by a Bi-Lo supermarket. An opening date has not yet been announced.

The bigger picture

HomeSense’s arrival underscores a broader trend: Mount Pleasant continues to attract national brands looking for high-traffic, high-growth locations.

For shoppers, it means more choice — especially for those furnishing new homes, refreshing spaces, or simply browsing for inspiration.

For the Highway 17 corridor, it’s another sign that the area’s retail momentum isn’t slowing down.
