Jack's Cafe closed six years ago, ending a run of nearly fifty years at 41 George Street. In mid-October the lights come back on. The name will be Jack's Diner, and the people behind it are not the ones you would have guessed.

Chaz Wendel and Tyler Hunt run Legend Deli, which opened next door in 2023. They are taking the space.

The group that didn't

Indigo Road Hospitality Group announced plans to restore and reopen Jack's Cafe back in 2023. Indigo Road owns Indaco, O-Ku and a stack of other Charleston restaurants. It had the capital and the operating bench to pull it off.

Then very little happened at the vacant space for a long stretch, and the group ultimately bowed out, president Steve Palmer told the Post & Courier.

Which is how it landed with the two guys from the deli next door.

What it will be

All-day breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. Wendel describes it as a New York-meets-Charleston diner serving "simple, classic food." Grits. Meatloaf. A club sandwich.

That is the entire pitch, and in this city that is the interesting part. Charleston has no shortage of ambitious kitchens. What it has been steadily losing is the kind of place where you can get a plate of meatloaf at nine at night without a reservation or a concept.

How the news broke

Not with a press release. A Facebook post inadvertently let it slip, and Wendel's phone started going.

"A lot of people are talking about it, a lot of people are calling me and asking all about it," he told the Post & Courier.

That reaction is worth more than any announcement would have been. Nobody floods a restaurateur's inbox over a sandwich shop. They do it over a room they have feelings about.

The name is the tell

Jack Sewell ran the original for more than forty years. The new operators kept his name on the door and changed one word behind it, Cafe to Diner, which is an honest way to signal what this is. Same address, same namesake, different hands.

"It's what the city needs, and it's what the people want," Wendel said.

He may well be right. He is also, notably, saying it about grits.
