There is a new Asian bakery at 5660 Rivers Avenue, near Remount Road, and it opened without much noise at all.
Who's Bakery is owner Helen (Yue) Hu's shop, and the case is deep: pork floss bread, taro mochi, Hong Kong-style egg tarts, Japanese-style cheesecake, matcha bread with cranberries and nuts, sweet potato buns, coffee walnut buns, a mango Swiss roll cake. Decorated birthday cakes if you order one. Everything baked fresh daily.
The organizing idea is low-sweet
That is the shop's own framing and it is the thing to understand before you go. Hu said every item is centered on simple ingredients rather than piling on. If your reference point for a bakery case is a grocery store sheet cake, this will read as restrained. That is deliberate.
"We hope people will come in to try something different and new," employee Sherry Xu told the Post & Courier. She called the shop a hidden gem, and said some customers treat it as a taste of home while others will find it entirely unfamiliar.
There are always samples out, which tells you they know the second group needs a nudge.
The early reviews are not subtle
One customer wrote on Facebook about a first visit: "We got a coffee walnut bun, sweet potato bun, peanut butter cookie and tiramisu. Everything was so delicious!! The shop is lovely, very stylish and great parking. The cakes were beautiful. Highly recommend!"
Great parking is doing quiet work in that sentence. It is also, if you have ever tried to buy a pastry downtown on a Saturday, not nothing.
Why it matters
Charleston's bakery conversation runs on a short list of peninsula names and has for years. The interesting stuff has been moving up Rivers Avenue and out into North Charleston for a while now, mostly without press. A shop like this opens, builds a following on word of mouth and a Facebook post, and stays invisible to half the metro area until somebody writes it down.
Consider it written down.
Open daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
