The Bar at Bad Bambino Is Built Entirely Out of Legos

West Ashley is getting an Italian restaurant on October 2. That is the boring part.

The interesting part is the bar. Joe Walker built a 46-foot one out of thousands of black Lego bricks, by hand, with superglue, and set a concrete slab weighing more than three tons on top of it.

Why it matters: Charleston has plenty of restaurants with a look. Very few have a centerpiece that took months to assemble and cannot be replicated by the next operator with a design budget.

The idea came from his kids. Walker was working through the concrete bar top with his two sons when they suggested folding in their Leaning Tower of Pisa set to match the Italian theme.

“It clicked and I thought how cool it would be to have Legos done as if they’re holding up this monolithic slab,” Walker told the Post & Courier.

Then he had to actually build it. Not a repeating pattern, which would have been easy and would have looked like a wall. Something closer to controlled chaos with an overarching structure underneath.

“A pattern, but not a simple repetitive one,” said Ali McCurdy, operations director for Bad Bambino and Walker’s other businesses.

Walker brought a giant Lego board to staff meetings to work the design out in front of people.

Here is the part that will drive you slightly crazy: nobody will say how many bricks are in it. Walker is saving the number for a reveal after the restaurant opens.

The rest of the room is built to match the bar’s intimacy rather than compete with it. Open kitchen. Wood, metal and black accents. One six-top, and the rest twos and fours. First come, first served, no reservations, which is either a gift or a gamble depending on how West Ashley takes to it.

McCurdy describes the feel as date night. That tracks with the seating math.

Walker is not new here. He and his wife Donna already run Cafe Roca, the breakfast spot that opened in May 2025, plus the Corner Shop for wine and local goods, and Shift Pilates, open since September 2024. Bad Bambino at 1301 Ashley River Road is the fourth thing on that stretch with their name on it.

That is the real story underneath the Legos. This is not a concept dropped onto Ashley River Road by somebody testing the market. It is an operator who already has three businesses running within walking distance deciding the neighborhood can support a proper Italian dinner room.

The bar is the thing people will photograph. The no-reservations policy is the thing that will tell you whether West Ashley shows up.
