Saturday, May 2, the Navy's Blue Angels rip across Charleston Harbor for what's now a single-day Air Show — shortened from the original two-day Joint Base Charleston event due to military operational requirements. Trial flights run Thursday and Friday. The main show is Saturday.

The Post & Courier has the play-by-play, and the short version is: this is going to be a big one.

How big

"The city is focused on making this event as accessible and enjoyable as possible," Charleston Police Sgt. Chris Stinson told the Post & Courier. He estimated the footprint will rival the annual Cooper River Bridge Run — which routinely draws 40,000 to 50,000 people — but spread across multiple days.

In other words: get downtown early, and don't drive anywhere you don't have to.

Where to watch

Officials are pointing people to a long list of harbor-facing vantage points:

• The walkway along the SC Aquarium, Maritime Center and International African American Museum
• The Battery and White Point Garden
• Waterfront Park (downtown)
• May Forest State Park
• Demetre Park on James Island
• Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park

Private charter and tour boats — Sandlapper among them — are also selling tickets to watch from the water.

Where to park (and where not to)

City garages run a $12 flat rate starting 10 a.m. Saturday:

• Aquarium Garage (21 Calhoun St.)
• Gilliard Garage (32 Alexander St.)
• Cumberland Street Garage (1 Cumberland St.)
• East Bay/Prioleau Garage (25 Prioleau St.)

Closures: Concord Street, Charlotte Street, Laurens Street, Vendue Range and Murray Boulevard.

Mount Pleasant has fewer options. Police are advising not to park along Patriots Point Boulevard. Ferry Wharf and other private garages will be open at posted rates.

The big stay-aways

The Ravenel Bridge. Pedestrian walkway closed April 30–May 2. Saturday vehicle traffic shuts down entirely from 1–2:30 p.m.
Patriots Point. Closed Saturday — fine for trial-day viewing, off-limits Air Show day.
Hospital garages. Don't. Just don't.

On the water

A formal safety zone covers a rectangular slice of Charleston Harbor and the airspace above it. No drones. No boats inside the zone without prior Coast Guard authorization. Mariners should monitor VHF Channel 16.

The forecast

Mostly cloudy, around 72°, 50% chance of showers. Air Show officials say the show goes on unless there's a serious safety risk — and it cannot be rescheduled. Updates will hit social and local news.

Why it matters for you

If you live or work anywhere downtown, on the Peninsula or in Mount Pleasant, your Saturday is going to feel different than usual. If you're hosting visiting family, this is a gift — Blue Angels for free over one of the prettiest harbors on the East Coast.

Just plan ahead. Bring water, sunscreen, and a working sense of patience.
