Rebecca Sakran calls her boss Joey at work. Everywhere else he is dad.
The two of them own Joey’s Pizzeria, which opened in December inside the revamped Shoppes at Montague Corners at 5060 Dorchester Road. It is counter service: slices, 14-inch and 18-inch pies, and the Italian-American supporting cast of fried raviolis, garlic knots, double-fried wings and penne in red sauce.
Why it matters: the Dorchester Road corridor has been quietly filling back in, and an independent pizzeria is the kind of tenant that tells you a shopping center revamp actually worked.
The family moved from upstate New York to Charleston in 2008. Joey worked at Boeing for nearly two decades before retiring to open the pizzeria he had been thinking about the whole time. If the Sakran name rings a bell, his brother is Jason Sakran, the former Charleston City councilman and co-owner of Bon Banh Mi.
The pizza is the specialty and it is not chasing a perfect New York slice. Rebecca describes the dough as slightly doughier than the standard.
The meatballs are the other thing. Same recipe her dad has been feeding her and her brother their entire lives.
“They taste like being a kid,” she said in the Post & Courier.
That is a hard thing to put on a menu and an easy thing to recognize when you eat it.
Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. Closed Tuesday, which is the detail worth writing down before you drive out there.
