Charleston’s dessert scene doesn’t sit still for long, and this summer it’s adding three new stops at once.
First up is Luma, an all-day bakery and cafe opening this fall at 128 Columbus St. downtown. Owner Owen Bernstein is building it around sourdough bread, pastries, cinnamon rolls, breakfast sandwiches, and espresso drinks pulled from Methodical Coffee, with both grab-and-go and sit-down service. “We want to create a place that no matter what you’re looking for, you can come here every day,” Bernstein told the Post & Courier.
Out in Summerville, Cakes and Cones already beat everyone to the punch. Morgan Ford’s shop at Carnes Crossroads opened July 11, serving fresh cake by the slice topped with ice cream in a waffle cone, with rotating seasonal flavors and hours that run Tuesday through Sunday. Ford’s pitch is simple: “Make every day a birthday,” she said, aiming to “spark joy in our customers’ daily lives.”
Then there’s Dulce’s Churros, Cocktails + Ice Cream, opening its second Lowcountry location at Nexton. No opening date yet, but the concept is a known quantity at this point: Mexican-style churros, handcrafted ice cream, and specialty cocktails for the adults in the group who’d rather not share a kids’-menu treat.
Three different formats, three different neighborhoods, one clear signal: dessert isn’t an afterthought in this market anymore, it’s its own competitive category. Downtown gets the elevated bakery play. Summerville gets the nostalgia-forward cake-and-cone combo. Nexton gets the grown-up churro bar.
None of these are trying to be the next viral soft-serve stand. They’re just betting Charleston’s sweet tooth has room for one more player in a very crowded field, and given how fast Cakes and Cones filled up in its first week, they might be right.
