For a decade Spring Street got every opening worth talking about. Cannon Street finally got its turn.
Two Blokes Brewing Co. opened Aug. 11 at 114 Cannon St., in a 19th-century building steps from the Medical University of South Carolina in Cannonborough-Elliottborough. It is the brewery's second location. The flagship sits at 547 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant.
Why it matters. Cannon Street has been quietly assembling a food and beverage strip while everyone was watching the block over. Southbound, The Co-Op, Holey City Bagels and Annie Mae's Bakeshop all landed there in the last few years. Kyn is coming with sushi and Alteño with upscale Mexican. A brewery was the missing piece.
What is different downtown. This is not a copy-paste of the Mount Pleasant taproom. The Cannon Street location runs a small-batch system dedicated to specialty and experimental releases, which means the beer list here will not match the one across the bridge. Sours, stouts, IPAs and lagers on tap, plus wines from local distributor Grassroots Wine.
Food is bar food done properly: hand-cut french fries, a soft pretzel with beer cheese, dry-rubbed wings, flatbreads and sandwiches.
The building. They kept an antique refrigerator from the original structure and converted it to hold cold beer. Small move, but it is the kind of detail that separates a second location from a second location that belongs where it is.
The location math. Steps from MUSC is not an accident. A brewery on a residential strip with a teaching hospital at one end has a built-in weeknight crowd that most Charleston taprooms have to advertise for.
Hours. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
