Sunrise Bistro has spent 17 years planting flags around Charleston. Johns Island, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, Goose Creek. The one obvious blank on the map was West Ashley. Not anymore.
The breakfast chain is headed to 1901 Ashley River Road, the building with the giant dessert mural on the side. That's Annie O'Love's Cookie Cafe, Annie Oswald's vegan, gluten-free bakery. The Post & Courier reports Oswald assigned the lease to Sunrise, and the space will flip from cookies to Southern breakfast and lunch. There's no opening date yet.
TOGETHER WITH MAGNOLIA & MOSS EVENTS
The pie deserves a pedestal
Thanksgiving is four weeks out. Magnolia & Moss Events rents vintage dessert pieces, like the Sweet Magnolia Set, the White Gardenia Stand and the Mosswood Pedestal, plus candleware, linens and tabletop for the rest of the table. Mount Pleasant based, serving the Lowcountry.
Now look at where Sunrise already lives. The original opened on Johns Island in 2009, and that store is on Main Road, a short hop from Angel Oak. Mount Pleasant is on Johnnie Dodds. Summerville is on Miles Jamison Road.
Goose Creek came next, in a 2,580-square-foot former Bangkok Restaurant on St. James Avenue. When that one was in the works, owner Brian Appelt called it a way to test a fast-growing market. The Post & Courier also counts a Beech Island location over in Aiken County, which is a long way to go for French toast.
FEATURED EVENT
23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament
THURSDAY, NOV. 5 · PATRIOTS POINT LINKS, MOUNT PLEASANT
128 golfers, one Thursday. Knights of Columbus Council #12472 gave over $30,000 to local causes last year, and this is the fundraiser behind it. $150 covers green fees, cart, meals and swag. No foursome? They'll team you up.
Put those pins on a map and West Ashley looks less like a gamble and more like the last piece of the ring. Until now, a West Ashley regular's fix has meant a bridge or I-26.
The Goose Creek build is a decent preview of how Sunrise does a second-generation space. A black sign with halo lighting outside, a Sunrise mural on the wall inside. Which means 1901 Ashley River Road could go from one mural to another without missing a beat.
What you'll probably eat, if West Ashley gets the standard playbook: breakfast all day, Nancy's French Toast, enchiladas rancheros, open-faced omelets, and a corned beef Reuben once lunch kicks in. Sunrise also roasts coffee in house and sells it by the bag. Bring a tote.
The pork chop breakfast has had its fans too: a cooked-to-order chop with eggs, toast and grits or potatoes. The place is run by Appelt and Jessica Welenteichick, who were already juggling three stores back in 2021. Since then the list has grown to Goose Creek and Beech Island, with West Ashley on deck.
As for Oswald, she isn't going far. The Post & Courier reported back in February that Oswald put the bakery up for sale, with the recipes in the deal, to go all in on teaching yoga. Her studio, Anahata Yoga, is in Suite D of the same building. So the vegan baker becomes the yoga teacher next door to the omelet place. Charleston, everybody.
She's a Charleston native with about 20 years in restaurants, and her chalkboard ran to cookies with names like Back Dat Peach Up. That's a hard act to follow with a plate of grits.
Still TBD: an opening date, hours, and whether that mural survives the switch. Sunrise posts its news on Instagram at @sunrisebistrojisland, so that's where the date will show up first.
