Wonder Works has now outgrown its Belle Hall storefront twice.
In March 2017, the Mount Pleasant toy shop moved about 80 feet, into a bigger space in the same shopping center. Nine years later it went bigger again. The Post & Courier reports the floor jumped from roughly 3,500 square feet to close to 6,000. Same parking lot, a lot more elbow room. That is plenty of new shelf for Magna-Tiles and Jellycat.
TOGETHER WITH MAGNOLIA & MOSS EVENTS
The pie deserves a pedestal
Thanksgiving is four weeks out. Magnolia & Moss Events rents vintage dessert pieces, like the Sweet Magnolia Set, the White Gardenia Stand and the Mosswood Pedestal, plus candleware, linens and tabletop for the rest of the table. Mount Pleasant based, serving the Lowcountry.
The extra room has a job. According to the Post & Courier, it goes to tie-ins with Melissa & Doug, Tonies, LEGO and Mattel, plus more places where kids can get their hands on the merchandise before a parent gets a hand on a wallet.
That try-it-first setup is an old habit here. In 2018 Wonder Works hosted the first Mattel store-within-a-store, per the trade magazine Toy Book. A year later it opened tech-free play zones built with Melissa & Doug in its Mount Pleasant and West Ashley shops, which Charleston City Paper called the first of their kind in the country. The 2026 version is the same bet with more square footage.
FEATURED EVENT
23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament
THURSDAY, NOV. 5 · PATRIOTS POINT LINKS, MOUNT PLEASANT
128 golfers, one Thursday. Knights of Columbus Council #12472 gave over $30,000 to local causes last year, and this is the fundraiser behind it. $150 covers green fees, cart, meals and swag. No foursome? They'll team you up.
A little history for the newcomers. Christine Osborne and Dan Morrisey opened the first store on Aug. 10, 1990. That is 36 years of Lowcountry birthday party gifts. Morrisey died in 2007.
Elizabeth "Schnookie" Darby grew up in the shop, hanging around as a kid before going on the payroll, and took over from Osborne in 2021. Mount Pleasant Magazine reported the handoff was agreed on a handshake at a 5 a.m. meeting back in 2018. Very toy store.
She also knows the other side of the counter. In 2017 she worked as a sales rep for Toy Travelers, covering Georgia and South Carolina, and the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association gave her its Rising Star Award. The store itself got a turn on camera in season three of A Toy Store Near You, a series from The Nacelle Company.
The map has moved around, too. At one point there were four shops: West Ashley, Belle Hall, the City Market and Freshfields Village on Kiawah. West Ashley and Freshfields were folded into the others in 2020, and West Ashley came back in 2024, the Post & Courier reported at the time. The store's own site now lists three: Mount Pleasant, West Ashley and the City Market downtown.
The Post & Courier says the bigger Mount Pleasant floor will also host charity events, community programs and appearances by children's authors. No dates are posted on the store's website yet.
Holiday shopping starts in about four weeks. Budget extra time, because the kids will want to test everything. Find it at Belle Hall, off Long Point Road.
