Happy Thursday, Charleston! Where were you when you saw this last night?!

Chances are, you were at one of Charleston’s MANY watch-parties. Share House alley hosted 1,000 last night (after 1,500 revelers cheered on the first-round US game against Paraguay). Tons of bars around town are reporting packed crowds. The vibe around this very likable US team is positively electric.

Next up? Belgium, the team that knocked us out in the 2014 World Cup. Get ready, Charleston, and cheer our men on!

Four days before the Declaration was signed, Charleston was already celebrating. On July 2, 1776, General Charles Lee sat down in the city and wrote to the Continental Congress with the news everyone wanted: the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island had somehow repelled the most powerful navy on earth. The improbable June 28 victory bought the South two more years before the British returned. This July 4 weekend, the tall ship in the harbor is a living reminder of how close the whole thing came to going the other way.

We're cooking up “Brains & Brews,” short expert talks at a local bar. Would you show up?

Dinner Club is back, and we're back on the peninsula.

We're setting the table in Cannonborough/Elliottborough, one of the best dining neighborhoods in the city, on Wednesday, July 15 at 6:45 PM.

Come solo, come curious, and you'll leave with a few new friends and a story you're already texting someone about. We'll start with a gratis appetizer for the table, then let good food and better conversation take it from there. No agenda, no awkward name tags, just a bunch of Charlestonians who like to eat, sharing a table for a night.

Seats are limited, and the last went quickly.

I’ve been using a 3rd-party calendar/event aggregator service for almost as long as I’ve been publishing. I thought having a published calendar that you could sort, filter, and search to your heart’s content would be valuable.

Turns out it doesn’t get much traffic. So as tech bros like to say, I’ll be “sunsetting” it effective today.

I’d LOVE for y’all to continue to submit your events for consideration to be included in our curated Happenings section. See that link below. 👇🏼

Congrats to Gary M. of Daniel Island who guessed correctly in last week’s “Where Are We?” I was on Shem Creek at Tarvin’s Seafood. A great place to get off-the-boat shrimp.

RESTAURANTS

North Charleston recently landed on Food Network's list of the 10 best barbecue dishes in America. Not downtown. Not the barbecue you're picturing. It's Chinese, it's smoked with Southern technique, and one of the country's top chefs said “Lord have mercy” on camera.

Room to Choose Again

Charleston has quietly restocked its shelves. After years of buyers fighting over scraps, there are thousands of active listings across the tri-county again, and that changes how this summer feels on the ground. Buyers can walk a few homes before writing an offer, which sounds ordinary until you remember it wasn’t possible a couple of years ago. Prices haven’t cracked. The median is still up over last year, and Mount Pleasant is still Mount Pleasant. But choice is back, and choice rewards the buyer who has done the work to know what they actually want.
