Happy Friday morning, Charleston! On this day in 1729, eight really entitled guys in South Carolina were told to pound sand by King George II. The Lords Proprietors—English noblemen who’d been granted control of the entire Carolina colony (which included both North and South Carolina) in 1663 and had grown into THE definition of fat and happy—were told by the King “This ain’t working anymore”.

They were paid £22,500 for their walking papers, which equates to around $8,500,000 in today’s dollars. For the whole of the Carolinas. If the King had just paid the equivalent of $1.1 mil more in today’s dollars, he’d be able to own this ONE home near The Battery.

Congrats to Megan D. of West Ashley, who was the 1st to guess correctly in our “Where Are We” segment last week! Our photo was the mural at the now-closed Bevi Bene Brewing Company on the peninsula. If you missed it, we wrote a few weeks back about the breweries that have closed around town.

I’d really appreciate it if you’d click that button below and take 10 seconds to let me know your favorite parts of the newsletter. It’s a big help to keep me bringing you the content you love!

Vintage Clothing & Coffee Pair Beautifully In This North Charleston Newcomer

Herbert’s Vintage And Coffee opened in North Charleston on June 28

Tyler Troyer loves old clothes. “Vintage”, he’d prefer to call them. The simplicity. The form that follows function. The durability.

Shortly after the Delaware native finished college, around 2015, he traveled around the country in one of his first jobs with a non-profit doing university engagement. Naturally, college towns draw unique, sometimes unusual and always-compelling coffee shops. One he recalls visiting was Onyx Coffee in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

It was in these visits where Tyler honed his taste for a great cup of coffee. And what makes a warm, welcoming gathering place.

Around the same time, he realized he wasn’t crazy about his clothes. He was sporting the kind of work uniform a young guy not long out of college had to wear in a company environment. It literally didn’t fit him.

Tyler found himself drawn to secondhand, older clothing. Levi’s denim jackets, a 1960’s Vietnam-era jungle jacket, the OG-107 fatigues of the US military worn from 1952 through 1989.

It wasn’t only that they looked so damn cool and were timeless. The value, quality and attention to detail mattered, too. Tyler soon filled his closet with vintage clothing and realized, ”I think I have too much”.

He started selling clothes online and at pop-up markets, where he quickly realized he preferred interactions with real, live human beings over online sales.

He and his wife, Kennedy, lived in western North Carolina in Boone at the time. The idea of combining coffee and well-curated vintage clothing had been percolating—I couldn’t resist—for a while.

They’d become friends with another couple, Erin and Jon Carpenter, in Boone. Eventually, Erin and Jon moved to the Charleston area and got involved in the purchase and renovation of Reynolds Laundromat in North Charleston. You may recall hearing recently about them being surprised on the Kelly Clarkson show with a $10,000 donation from Arm & Hammer.

All along, Erin and Jon had been sharing with Tyler and Kennedy what they were doing with an old laundromat that had been closed for decades on Reynolds Avenue, on a street that was once-thriving when the Navy was a major employer in the area.

It was a portion of the space, in the back of the laundromat building, untouched for years, that planted something in Tyler’s brain. This was where he and Kennedy could combine great coffee with cool vintage clothing.

Herbert’s Vintage And Coffee was born in that old, musty space.

As for the name Herbert, that’s Tyler’s first name.

Herbert just sounds like an old school grandpa name... so we’re going with it. In a time where everybody’s trying to think of new names, it’s kind of nice to be like, ‘Oh, okay, that’s an old name. It’s been around a while.’

Tyler on what makes for expert differentiation

Tyler and Kennedy succeeded in creating a warm, welcoming space that serves great coffee and sells cool clothes. It’s located at 2017 Reynolds Avenue in North Charleston.
