Happy Friday morning, Charleston! On this day in 1814, Charlestonās citizens gathered at St. Philipās Church to pass resolutions that led to large-scale citywide efforts to bolster defenses. It was a response to fears of a British invasion heightened by events in Baltimore during the not-very-sexily-named War of 1812.
The actions taken on September 12 resulted in thousands of Charlestoniansāmilitary and civilians, including free people of colorāvolunteering their labor to construct defensive lines across the peninsula in the weeks that followed. This effort showcased a rare degree of collective action and community resilience during wartime.
Congrats to Jake J. of Downtown, who was the 1st to guess correctly in our āWhere Are Weā segment last week! Our photo was the now-under-construction and soon-to-be 2nd location of Odd Duck Market, located just south of Hampton Park at Rutledge and Moultrie. Get the breakfast sandwich on your bread of choice when you go! Their brilliant innovation was a garlic aioli to die for.

New Indie Bookstore āLadybird Booksā to Open on King Street This October
Iāve been a voracious reader since I was five years old, when my mom and aunt carved out a reading nook in my bedroom closetālightbulb, comfy chair, stacks of Hardy Boys and Tolkien. While other kids were glued to TV, I was happily lost in other worlds. Which is why the news that Charleston is getting a brand-new indie bookstore feels like Christmas morning.
This October, Ladybird Books will open at 299 King Street, taking over the old Quiksilver space. Instead of board shorts, expect shelves curated with literary fiction, contemporary Southern stories, cookbooks that make you hungry, memoirs, and even a cheeky āHow to Be a Humanā section.
At the helm is Summer Anderson, a lifelong book lover whoās turned passion into profession. After years in New York events, she leaned into her familyās bookish legacyāher husbandās grandfather founded Books-A-Millionāand launched āSummer Says,ā her long-running platform for recommending and reviewing titles. Now sheās putting all that experience into Ladybird, which also has the honor of serving as the official bookseller for the 2025 Charleston Literary Festival.
But Ladybird isnāt just about books. Anderson envisions it as a āthird placeāāa welcoming space thatās not home and not work, but somewhere you linger. Alongside the shelves, youāll find gifts, greeting cards, and wrapping paper too good to waste, plus author readings and community events that make it feel more like a cultural living room than a store.
Donāt worryāIāll get an interview with Ms. Anderson and do a video profile of Ladybird Books when they open. Stay tuned.
