Happy Thursday, Charleston. On this day in 1863, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley failed to surface during a diving drill in Charleston Harbor, and all eight men aboard drowned, including Horace Hunley himself, one of its owners. They raised it anyway. Four months later it sank the USS Housatonic off Sullivan's Island, the first submarine ever to sink an enemy ship, then went down again and stayed there until 2000.

Shout-out to the Taylor Festival Choir. They open their season this Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 PM at Circular Congregational Church with Sea to Shining Sea, a tribute to America's 250th. Expect a fiddle, a guitar, a brand-new barbershop quartet, and God Bless America and the national anthem. Get tickets →

Eight new gyms and studios just landed around Charleston. So where do you actually work out?

Dinner Club heads to Summerville on Wednesday, Oct. 28. $12 a seat, 6:30 PM, a table full of people you haven't met yet. It's our first night running the whole thing in-house, so come help us break it in.

Congrats to Behren K. of James Island, who guessed correctly in last week's Where Are We? It was Alhambra Hall in the Old Village.

You've Tried The Gym. This Isn't The Gym

I'm Kim. I've trained women over 50 for years, and I know the quiet dread of walking into a room where everyone already knows what they're doing. Nobody here is keeping score. We start where you are.

We warm up together. Then 45 minutes of strength work, and I explain every move as we go.

Wednesday at 8:30am on the courts at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. Free, and nothing to sign up for.

THE FEED

A newly built restaurant in Mount Pleasant has never served a single plate. The first plan came with a lawn, a live music stage and an ice cream shack, then it never opened. Now one of Charleston's best-known restaurant groups is taking it over, and what it's becoming is the part nobody can answer.

For CHS Happenings readers: 15% off any booking through October 31. Valid on sessions, not parties.

Development Watch October 15, 2026

Live Oak Square Wants to Grow Again

Live Oak Square on Maybank Highway leased up so fast in 2021 that the developer put out a press release about it, all 14 storefronts done. Months later, the same ownership filed to add one more commercial building on the same lot. It went quiet for three years, then came back this spring, and this week it's on the city's agenda again with no tenant named yet. With Johns Island growing the way it is, retail follows rooftops, and this corner looks ready for its next chapter.
