Happy Thursday, Charleston. On this day in 1863, Union guns on Morris Island and ironclads in the harbor were four days into a renewed pounding of Fort Sumter. By an Associated Press count, 1,657 shells hit the fort that day alone. James Henry Gooding, a Black soldier in the 54th Massachusetts who wrote letters home to the New Bedford Mercury, watched from Battery Gregg. Around 10 o'clock, he wrote, Sumter's flag and staff were shot off the wall and into the water. A Confederate soldier put up another under steady fire, waited for a lull to set it upright, then waved his hat and barely dodged a shot from a field gun.

After 38 years, I called time on my real estate career a few weeks ago. I spent my first 31 years as a commercial broker, leasing space to restaurant owners and retailers. That’s what formed my lifelong connection to local entrepreneurs and was the genesis for CHS Happenings. I was ready to try something different, though. I’m excited about what’s next.

So…no more Broker’s Take. From me anyway. But if you’re a Realtor and would like to sponsor that section, email me!

Congrats to Tyler W. of James Island, who guessed correctly in last week's Where Are We? It was Berlins Clothing on King Street.

PRESENTED BY BLOOM50 COLLECTIVE

Bloom50 Collective class at Memorial Waterfront Park

Let's be honest: it's easier with a friend

"She takes the chore out of fitness and creates a welcoming space that leaves you counting down the days until your next session." — Mary C.

Text a friend right now. Tell her Wednesday, 8:30, Memorial Waterfront Park. It's free for both of you, and I'll be the one with the whiteboard. Want a second morning? Monday classes are at 8:30 too, $12.

THE FEED

Mount Pleasant just wrote a $28.5 million check on Highway 41. On paper, it bought 129 acres for a park. What it really bought was about 1,500 houses that will never get built, and I did the math on what each one cost. The seller did just fine, too.

WHERE AM I?

Just reply to this email, or if you're reading on our website, email me here. The first person to guess correctly will get a shout-out at the top of our issue next week!

TOGETHER WITH MAGNOLIA & MOSS EVENTS

Magnolia & Moss Events vintage dessert table

The pie deserves a pedestal

Thanksgiving is four weeks out, and somebody's bringing a pie that deserves better than the foil tin. Magnolia & Moss Events rents vintage dessert pieces, like the Sweet Magnolia Set, the White Gardenia Stand and the Mosswood Pedestal, plus candleware, linens and tabletop to dress the rest of the table. Mount Pleasant based, serving Charleston and the Lowcountry.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

James Island put in an order for a steakhouse. The couple behind The Harlow asked the island what it wanted, and the answer came with a stage, a char grill and one firm rule about franchises. I talked with the owner before the doors open.
