Happy Thursday, Charleston. On this day in 1945, about 1,000 workers, most of them Black, walked off the job at the American Tobacco Company's Cigar Factory on East Bay Street. They wanted a 25-cent raise, back pay from the war years and an end to discrimination in hiring, and they held the picket line for five months. To keep spirits up, strikers closed out each day singing an old hymn, "I'll Overcome Someday." The song traveled, picked up new verses and became "We Shall Overcome," the anthem of the civil rights movement. Next time you pass that big brick building on East Bay, now you know.
A new private club just opened on the Neck, and it stops at 400 members. So where do you land?
Tidewater Social Club opened this summer on the Neck. Real talk, where are you on the private club thing?

One of Charleston's ghosts has better paperwork than most of us. He was a poet, a doctor and 22 years old when a friend shot him in a duel 240 years ago this week. The records still can't agree on where it happened, and the people on Church Street aren't convinced he ever left.

TOGETHER WITH FLEET FEET
Show up. Run. Repeat.
Every Monday at 6:30pm, Fleet Feet hosts Monday Runday at all four Charleston-area locations, with a walking route planned too. On Wednesdays, the group runs somewhere new: a pub run, a Memory Game Run, a Football Run, a Silent Disco Run, a Scrabble Run, each at a different Charleston bar or restaurant.
Next up: the Halloween Run at Commonhouse Aleworks, Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 PM. It's a joint pub run for all four stores, featuring Altra, Feetures, Oofos and Nathan.
All faces, all paces, runners and walkers alike. Just show up.
Charleston chases every grand opening. Kim and I spent a night at a restaurant that opened in 1992, and it ran circles around most of them. The chef says lasting is the new cool, and there's a dish that isn't even on the menu.

A Hotel Was Supposed to Bring 159 Homes Back to Meeting Street
In 2017, a block of apartments on Meeting Street came down for a hotel. The city’s price for the hotel was homes, 159 of them. Nine years later the hotel is back in front of the architecture board, and the homes are on a different street.
