Happy THURSDAY, Charleston. 🍽️ Dinner Club is crossing the bridge.

April 1st. Mount Pleasant. 6:45 PM.

We're taking the CHS Happenings Dinner Club to a new neighborhood — and that means new restaurants, new faces, and the same magic formula you've come to love: strangers who don't stay strangers for long.

Spots are limited. They always go fast. And if you've been on the fence, this is your sign.

Congrats to repeat-winner Bryan F. of West Ashley who guessed correctly in last week’s “Where Are We?” I was at Coming Street Grocery. It’s been a grocery for at least a century, and it's tied to one of Charleston's notable Jewish immigrant families.

The old painted advertisement still visible on the Spring Street side of the building advertises the National Grocery Co., operated by a man named Ben Yaschik. Henry Yaschik — likely a relative — came to Charleston as a young child in 1913 after being born in Argentina and living briefly in Poland. He worked in the family grocery business on Coming and Spring Streets before eventually moving into real estate and mortgage, building companies that are still operating today.

One more before you scroll on.

Heylo is where the IRL stuff lives — Dinner Club chat, Mah-jongg nights, Battery games, and whatever we dream up next.

Thirty seconds. Worth it. →

How to Eat Out in Charleston Without Feeling the Bill

Let’s be honest: eating out in Charleston has gotten expensive.

Menus climbed. Portions shrank. And somehow the check still arrives with the quiet confidence of a car payment.

But here’s the good news: great meals at reasonable prices still exist.

You just have to know where locals go.

Casual & Delish

Not every night calls for linen napkins.

Some of the best value meals in Charleston happen in relaxed neighborhood spots where the food punches well above the price point.

Think Berkeley’s — burgers, sandwiches, and a laid-back room that feels like a local living room.

Or Maybank Public House on James Island, where the food is thoughtful, the vibe is easy, and the prices still feel grounded in reality.

Then there’s Commonhouse Aleworks, where Swig & Swine runs the food program, in Park Circle — part brewery, part community hub, all good energy.

These are the kinds of places you go when you want good food without the ceremony.

Dive bar dinners

Charleston dive bars quietly deliver some of the city’s best value.

At Moe’s Crosstown Tavern, wings and burgers still land at prices that feel almost vintage.

Blind Tiger Pub leans into shareable starters, while The Royal American turns out hearty sandwiches — including a deeply satisfying patty melt that tastes like comfort.

Pizza math

One of the oldest dining hacks still works: split a pie.

At D’Allesandro’s Pizza, many 12-inch pizzas come in under $20.

Meanwhile Pizza a Modo Mio, and OK Donna keep slices and small pies firmly in the “weeknight friendly” zone.

Taco trucks & Mexican staples

North Charleston might quietly be the region’s best dining bargain.

El Molino, Rebel Taqueria, and La Taqueria Express are proof that a few dollars can still buy something deeply satisfying.

Three tacos for six bucks? That’s practically civic infrastructure.

This is exactly what CHS Happenings Dinner Club chases.

Great kitchens. Welcoming rooms. Menus locals can actually enjoy.

And here's the secret most people figure out fast: you don't have to go big. Order an app. Split something. Grab a cocktail.

The real luxury isn't the price tag. It's a good table, interesting people, and a bill that doesn't ruin the night.

Just reply to this email, or if you’re reading on our website, email me here. The first person to guess correctly will get a shout-out at the top of our issue next week!

One Thing We’re Seeing

Renovation Regret

We’re talking more sellers out of “one last project” than into it. Not because upgrades don’t matter—but because not all upgrades return what people expect. Sometimes restraint is the smartest improvement you can make.
