Happy Thursday, Charleston. On this day in 1863, Confederate spy Rose O’Neal Greenhow sat trapped in a besieged Charleston, writing home that she’d never “felt so little hopeful” in her life. She’d already done a stint in a Washington, D.C. prison for running intelligence to the Confederacy, and now she was stuck in Charleston harbor, unable to sail out because the Union blockade had the port locked down tight.
Even so, she found room to gush about General Beauregard, calling him “the most interesting person I ever saw. Grand in his simplicity indeed he is.” Grim as the letter reads, it’s a real-time snapshot of just how tight the noose had gotten around Charleston by the summer of ‘63, a full two years before the war actually ended here..

The Supply Wave Finally Landed
For years the story here was simple, not enough homes and too many buyers, sellers holding every card. That story is quietly changing. Thousands of new apartments and a handful of new master planned communities out toward Summerville have actually shown up, and buyers are noticing. People are taking their time now, comparing two or three neighborhoods before writing an offer instead of racing to beat one. It’s not a crash, it’s Charleston finally catching its breath after a decade of sprinting. Good for buyers, and something for sellers to plan around instead of assume away.
