Happy Thursday, Charleston. On September 3, 1963, a tenth grader named Millicent Brown and an eighth grader named Jackie Ford walked through the front doors of Rivers High School. They were the first Black students in South Carolina to enter a formerly all-white school, nine years after Brown v. Board, and only because a federal judge had ordered it. Ten more followed them into Charleston County schools that month, which made South Carolina the last state in the country to desegregate its classrooms.
Millicent's reward for making history was glares, silence, and enough anxiety to put her in the hospital. She stayed anyway, graduated with her class in 1966, and went on to earn a doctorate and spend a career teaching the history she had personally lived through.

Gather MTP will open in Mount Pleasant early next year
In December they moved a 100-year-old live oak 700 feet across a lot in Midtown Mount Pleasant. On airbags, at a walking pace, after fourteen months of getting the tree ready for the trip. Nobody made them do it, and cutting it down would have been faster and a lot cheaper.

Buyers Are Reading The Reserve Study
The evacuated Dockside tower on Concord Street is formally for sale, and the consensus among the people marketing it is that whoever buys those three acres takes the building down. Owners had already voted down a repair bill past $150 million. So the price, whatever it lands at, is a price for the dirt. Charleston condo buyers noticed. The questions I’m fielding now open with reserves, assessment history and the date of the last structural inspection, and only get around to the kitchen later. That’s a smarter way to shop than this market has seen in years.
