Happy Thursday, Charleston. On this day in 1787, thirty-nine men signed the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia. Four of them were from South Carolina, and three of those four were born right here. John Rutledge chaired the Committee of Detail, the group that took months of arguing and turned it into a first full draft. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney was one of the convention’s loudest voices for a strong national government. Pierce Butler, the Irish-born outlier, spoke for the planters who sent him. And Charles Pinckney was all of 29, with a country place off Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant that is a National Park Service site today. One small city, four names on that page.

A West Ashley restaurant opens October 2 with a 46-foot bar built entirely out of black Lego bricks, holding up a concrete slab that weighs more than three tons. The owner assembled every piece by hand, with superglue, over months of staff meetings spent hunched over a giant Lego board. He will not say how many bricks it took, and he is making all of us wait for the number.

Stop Waiting On The Fed
The Fed met again this week, and the part nobody covers is the part that matters: it doesn’t set your mortgage rate, the bond market does. That’s why a 30-year loan costs more today than it did a year ago, after a year of cuts that were supposed to make it cheaper. I’ve watched buyers here sit out season after season, chasing a quarter point that never shows up the way they pictured it. The ones who stopped waiting didn’t land a better rate. They landed a better house, in a stretch of the calendar nobody else was bidding on.
