Happy THURSDAY, Charleston. 241 years ago today, six Founding Fathers helped charter the school now known as the College of Charleston. The press ignored it. We won't.

On that day, the College of Charleston was officially chartered to "encourage and institute youth in the several branches of liberal education."

The founders of the College included six Founding Fathers β€” three signers of the Declaration of Independence (Thomas Heyward Jr., Arthur Middleton, and Edward Rutledge) and three framers of the U.S. Constitution (John Rutledge, Charles Pinckney, and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney).

And when it was chartered, it drew little attention from the press. Underrated then, obviously not now β€” it went on to become the 13th-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and the oldest municipal college in the country.

Congrats to Brittney L. of Summerville who guessed correctly in last week's "Where Are We?" The photo was the chef's table mural on Queen Street β€” a stone's throw from Poogan's Porch.

That mural has a story worth telling.

Last July, I had the privilege of working with Hanna Raskin β€” one of the sharpest food writers in the country and publisher of The Food Section β€” on a piece about Charleston's culinary coming-of-age. She captured something I'd felt but couldn't articulate: that "arrival" for a food city is messier than the accolades suggest. Her opener said it all.

"Of the 14 Charleston food-and-beverage superstars who loom over Queen Street in a mural painted by David Boatwright, four have left the industry. Three have moved away. Two have died."

There’s a house on King Street with the door unlocked β€” and it’s not what you think.
Inside, two Charleston founders are building something that looks like fitness, but feels a lot more like belonging.

This one’s about loneliness, community, and why people are sticking around.

There's no "standard" commission. You already knew that, right? But if you asked most agents to list your home, there's a good chance they'd propose 3%.

We don't.

One Thing We’re Seeing

Real Estate Desk

The Spring Myth

Waiting for the β€œperfect season” sounds smartβ€”until you realize buyers don’t shop by calendar. They shop when life happens. We’ve seen strong outcomes in every month of the year, depending on preparation and expectations.

Friday

Big Shows

  • Inside Out brings two sets of Phil Collins and Genesis to Forte Jazz Lounge β€” the real stuff, done right.

  • The CSO Pops takes over the Gaillard for a full patriotic orchestral celebration β€” one of the bigger productions of the month.

Something Different

  • Eggy rolls into the Pour House main stage on their Something in the Air Tour β€” indie-leaning jam band with a real following.

  • CTRL ROOM brings funk and soul to The Commodore β€” the kind of low-key Friday night that doesn't disappoint.

Late Night

  • Weird Science owns the Windjammer inside stage β€” Charleston's go-to 80s band doing exactly what you'd expect, in the best way.

Saturday

Big Shows

  • Bernadette Peters at Charleston Music Hall β€” a Broadway and pop legend, one night only.

  • The CSO Pops returns to the Gaillard for night two of the patriotic orchestral program.

Something Different

  • Legacy runs two full sets of Motown and soul at Forte Jazz Lounge β€” the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, executed with care.

  • What's Up Chuck brings reggae, ska, and funk-rock back to the Windjammer inside stage β€” reliably one of the better late-night options in town.

Sunday

Brunch & Daytime

  • New Ghost Town plays bluegrass brunch at Prohibition β€” free with dining, easy call.

  • Motown Throwdown takes the Pour House deck β€” soul music, sunshine, and no pressure.

Evening
